good question, I'm a new player (open beta) so I don't know exactly what happened during the closed beta but from the bits and pieces i have heard their were 3 groups of players in the closed beta, EvE Online players and 2 opposing factions from MAG. I'm sure there were many others but its seems these 3 made up the bulk of closed beta players.
At the start these 3 player groups had different ideas about what Dust514 should be and it caused a fair amount of friction between the groups. But as the game progressed through the closed beta the game became something that they all could like, compromises were made and the end result was an awesome game that they all liked (thanks Closed beta guys)
Eventually the 3 factions, having lost the friction caused by differences in opinion started to work together and grow closer as a community, they all were working towards the goal of having a kick ass game and to best do so they worked together instead of against each other. so by the end of the closed beta there was a relatively tight but small closed beta community.
Cue Open Beta
Open beta comes, floods of new player ignorant to the ways of dust meaning the high level gaming that the closed beta group had got used to was almost imposable to find. the new players were clueless at best and ignorant at worst. So the closed beta guys had a choice, help out the new guys, improving the quality of the game or abandon them and suffer the drop in quality of players. Some decided to help, some let us newberries suffer. But by and large the Closed Beta Players put in a lot of effort to get as much of the information that they had learned over the 6+ months of closed beta across to us newberries, these guys were amazing and ill always have a lot of respect for the guys that did this.
So with all the Old players helping the new players the divide between old and new was dramatically shortened and the community grew closer still. now newberries have the information they can help fellow newberries and you end up with a community that is based on helping each other.
It was about the same time that some of us new players realised that Dust will make or break on the strength of its community. So those of us that realised this and agreed with it went out into the community and tried to help people where ever we could. teach them, educate them hell just being friendly. we tried to make the community as friendly and as welcoming as we possibly could. and I like to think by and large we aren't doing to bad.
TL:DR
So, a community built on a common goal, spread by sharing and finished with just a little bit of kindness. As for why, to make the best fpsmmo the world has seen supported by the best community the fpsmmo community has seen.
Now that's not to say its all love and roses, farm from it, bickering and heated debate are everywhere you look and as corps have more to do and EvE online starts to hire specific corps rifts will form in game and I don't doubt for a second people will rage, but the core of the community is a good one, and one that I and I like to think a lot of others are proud to be apart of.
*having re-read this before posting it iv realised it doesn't really answer the question of why, and I wasn't sure if I should post it at all. But id be interested in seeing how close i am, how many people agree disagree or just think I'm wrong. So like/post/troll away* |
